How To Use WhatsApp's New Channels Feature

How To Use WhatsApp's New Channels Feature

WhatsApp Channels feature was announced last month and it allows organizations to broadcast to followers in one-to-numerous format, which is similar to a viral platform by Telegram.

These Channels were first launched in Colombia and Singapore a month ago before being availed to users in other countries, including Kenya early this week.

The one-way broadcast enables administrators to send data like text, Videos, photos, and stickers to followers.

This means that users can now subscribe to channels from organizations, people, or sensational topics they feel interested in to receive updates without taking part in a discussion similar to that of WhatsApp groups.

How to find and follow channels:

Check out the channels list available to you by clicking on the Updates tab or formerly Status, then go down to the Channels section below Status updates.

Select Find channels. Channels with a green checkmark have been verified by WhatsApp as being authentic.

Preview channel updates before following by tapping the channel name to preview current updates.

The Quick Way

You can also follow a channel from the directory by tapping the Plus next to the channel name. To search for a channel, tap Search.

Alternatively, channel admins can also be able to share a link outside WhatsApp to help people find their channel.

Immediately you have the link, you can join the channel by clicking the link to open a channel in WhatsApp and browse updates.

You can also follow channels from your channel info page, or when previewing the channel by tapping the Follow button.

If you would like to know when there are new updates turn on notifications for a specific channel.

Advantages of this feature

This Telegram-like feature WhatsApp incorporated in a Channel is private to users following a channel; one cannot be visible to other channel followers.

At the same time, other followers can’t see the phone, name, phone number, or profile picture of other followers of a channel.

Also, other contacts cannot see which channels you follow except an admin of a channel you follow.

The Channel admins are also limited; they can only see a follower’s name and profile picture, according to one’s privacy settings.
